Larry and Wendy Brown are a couple of my favorite customers and thinking of them running their Devlin Black Crown 29, the Gooselodge, always brings to mind an image of the two of them standing in the cockpit, steering from her aft steering station with the sun on their faces and wind in their hair. It wasnt a surprise then when a couple of months ago during a visit to the shop, the subject came up for a runabout type design that would allow them enjoy every last morsel of nice weather that Puget Sound can dish out in the summer time. The requirements were very simple -- a fast and responsive day-cruiser that would allow them to dash about the Sound. She needed to have a couple of bunks forward for an occasional nap when the time allowed and a Porta-Potti that could be stowed in the same cabin. The boat had to be stylish and smooth running with similar handling characteristics to their previous boat so that both of them could, seamlessly and without a lot of training, get used to her.

So I laid a fresh sheet of drawing paper on the drafting table and the Surf Runner 25 was the result. Their former vessel had a diesel sterndrive so the debate over power was short and decisive with a Volvo-Penta 165hp diesel sterndrive chosen. That engine package would allow us a top speed of around 25 knots and a comfortable and economical cruising speed at 20 knots. At that speed, the skipper can still steer around the flotsam that is present in Puget Sound in the Summer months but also allows the sea miles to tick away relatively quickly so that exploring or simply going someplace by water for lunch doesnt have to take all day.

The Surf Runner has a canvas bimini top over the helm station that can be folded forward up against the windscreen on those really nice and warm summer days. If the weather is a bit inclement, then the cover allows running the boat to be done with skipper and crew sheltered from the wind and the rain and much more comfortable than in a full open boat. Just behind the helm and co-helm seats are port and starboard stowage lockers that allow gear and even a picnic basket to be stowed out of the way. It is possible to even plumb a small sink and mount a refrigerator in these areas but on this vessel, they are stowage areas only. Aft of the helm area is a open cockpit with port and starboard bench seats and under the engine box lid there is a stowage compartment on either side. With the engine hatch down and the cushions set up, a large day-berth allows a simple and comfortable nap to be taken in the sun when desired.

The Surf Runner 25 is smooth running without any pounding and with a presence on the water that evokes the style of another time, not confusable with all the blister type speed boats seen so commonly tied up in the marinas these days. She is a boat built for the water and ready for more of it. It would be hard to imagine not being able to enjoy this fine boat.
